The Islamic fighters last stand

There was fighting in Helashid, 18 kilometers (11 miles) northwest of Jilib, the gateway to the Islamic group's coastal stronghold of Kismayo, where an estimated 3,000 hardcore Islamic fighters were preparing for a bloody showdown.

Ethiopian MiG fighter jets were also buzzing Kismayo, an AP reporter said.

"My fighters will defeat the Ethiopians' forces," Sheik Ahmed Mohamed Islan, the head of the Islamic movement in the Kismayo region, told the AP.

"Even if we are defeated we will start an insurgency. We will kill every Somali that supports the government and Ethiopians."

I hope the insurgency won't happen. The Ethiopians are taking no prisoners and killing the Islamic fighters when they capture them. Its the way to fight these bastards. The only way to win is to kill them all.

Somoli plans to capture US embassy bombers

Somalia's prime minister said Sunday that the suspects in the 1998 bombings of two US embassies in east Africa are sheltering in the stronghold of his country's militant Islamic movement.

"We are hunting those known to be responsible for the terrorist bombings in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998," Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi told the Associated Press.

The three men are al-Qaida suspects all under US indictment for the 1998 bombings of embassies in Kenya and Tanzania that killed hundreds of people.

"We know they are in Kismayo," Gedi said. "We would like to capture or kill these guys at any cost. They are the root of the problem."

Great! Finally somebody (more than Clinton did) is going after those killers!

Saddam is getting a new colar

Saddam Hussein's lawyer estimated on Friday afternoon that he would be executed on Saturday.

Najiv Nai'mi, in an interview to Al Jazeera television, said that the US instructed Saddam's lawyers to receive his personal belongings, and that this was a sign that he would probably be executed the next day.

BAGHDAD, Dec. 27 -- A top deputy of Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr was killed Wednesday during a raid by U.S. and Iraqi troops in the southern holy city of Najaf, sparking protests from Sadr's followers and complicating an already tense relationship with the powerful anti-American leader.

Hurling rocks and shouting expletives, thousands of angry Sadr loyalists marched through the streets of Najaf after Sahib al-Amiri was shot and killed by a U.S. soldier during an early morning raid. "Agents and stooges!" protesters shouted at Iraqi soldiers and local authorities.


U.S. military officials declined to confirm that Amiri was a Sadr aide, saying only that he had provided explosives for use against Iraqi and U.S. forces. Sadr officials said Amiri was an aide and a lawyer who ran an educational organization that helped orphans and impoverished children. They said he had no connections to illegal activity.

In a statement, the U.S. military said Iraqi and U.S. forces were trying to detain Amiri and shot him only when he pointed an assault rifle at an Iraqi soldier

Taliban smoked

THE Taliban commander in charge of attacks on British and Nato forces in southern Afghanistan was reported yesterday to have been killed in a US airstrike after an RAF aircraft intercepted his satellite telephone.

Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Osmani, the Taliban treasurer, was the most senior member of the group’s leadership to die in the war on terror, according to US officials.

A Taliban spokesman, however, said he was still alive.

Osmani, an associate of Osama Bin Laden, is said to have been part of a triumvirate with Mullah Dadullah, the Taliban military commander, and Mullah Omar, the Taliban leader. Osmani headed Taliban operations in six provinces.

Military souces said he had been killed by a strike on his vehicle as he and his aides left a village in the Zahre area. An RAF R1 monitoring aircraft is believed to have been tracking him. The aircraft was working with a US special operations team, including members of Delta Force, plus intelligence specialists from a unit known as Task Force Orange who tracked him on the ground.

The satellite telephone signal allowed the RAF aircraft to pinpoint Osmani’s location. As he headed out of the village in a 4x4, a US plane dropped a smart bomb onto the vehicle.

The Taliban issued an immediate denial, saying the bomb had killed Mullah Abdul Zahir, a district commander, and three of his men.

The spread of this war is by design, not accident. In his statement earlier this week (as translated by Laura Mansfieldal Qaeda leader Ayman Zawahiri went out of his way to signal support for the Islamist movement in Somalia, saying “Brothers in Islam and jihad in Somalia, know that you are the southern garrison of Islam, so don’t allow Islam to be attacked from your flank and know that we are with you and the entire Muslim Umah is with you.”

The conflict is designed not only to establish a space that can be defined as the beginning of the Islamist Caliphate, a necessary physical space from which to launch succeeding holy wars against the unbelievers. It is also aimed at creating widespread instability in a fragile region in East Africa, rich in mineral resources with weak and corrupt central governments.

Osama bin Laden has spoken in the past of the need to open a “third front” with a ground war that will bleed the U.S. military dry. He has argued that the al Qaeda front in Iraq, coupled with the front in Afghanistan/Pakistan, has stretched the U.S. military to its limits. A third front would make triumph in the other two more likely.

The stark disinterest of the United States and most European powers, or serious efforts by other African nations to face the consequences of an Islamist triumph in Somalia is striking and dangerous. The consequences of a regional war are difficult to calculate, but they will be serious.

I heard this one about 4 stranded Solders at SF. A Navy Vet helped them rent a car and drive them home for Christmas. And what a Merry Christmas they and their families will have. Thanks to you Paul Deines! You are a great American and thanks for your service.

"I'm a veteran myself," said Deines, 50, who served in the Navy. "I know how it is, being away from home on Christmas. I said, 'Let's get together and do something about it.' "

Deines had been in San Francisco on vacation.

He said the group drove straight through for 23 hours to get back to Denver. They ran into snow at Glenwood Springs, but made it over Vail Pass and got into Denver on Thursday afternoon, just as the blizzard was ending.

"That's what happens when people get together and help each other out," Deines said.

For the Kible family of Centennial, Christmas this year will be especially meaningful because of the kindness of a stranger.

"It was such a nice thing for Paul to do," Stacey Kible said. "He rented that van to get these boys home for Christmas. To me, that's truly the spirit of giving and the spirit of Christmas."

Remember Pearl Harbor!

65 years ago a "day of infamy."

65 years ago we entered a three front war with Japan, Germany and Italy. My parents were only 5 years old. But they remember that day. I was five years old when JFK was shot. My Kathryn was 4 years old when 9/11 happened. It is ironic the Baker/Hamilton (Loosing in) Iraq report comes out the day before this historic day in American history.

My Uncle first joined the Marines then became a Navy officer during the war. He was deployed to Pearl Harbor after the US entered the war. My views of the war are on the account of my Uncle who was there and fought against the Japanese. I always looked up to him and am glad he served our country with honor. My husband was in the Navy for 24 years and retired this fall. He served his country and is proud of it. Our family is a military family. My sisters married former service men both Air Force and Army. Of course I married the Navy one! (LOVE the inter-service rivalry at family gatherings! LOL!)

We see the Iraq war AS A WAR. Its not a problem to be solved (As Nancy P. sees it) other than having our service men and women fight the war as they are trained to do. Let them fight the fight, and WIN THE WAR in VICTORY ! No negotiation with the ENEMY until they surrender (Not the USA cutting and running).

Pearl Harbor was a lesson learned. Don't leave your pants undone! But we won the war. It wasn't pretty and we lost on an average of 8,000 servicemen a month for 4 years. The War on Terror is going to be a long one. Our 'ignoring' the problem let the terrorists attack us with "our pants undone" again. We forgot the lesson learned at Pearl Harbor and WTC got hit.

My message to the cut and run Dems is this. This is a WAR. We need to win the WAR at any cost. We need to sacrifice inorder to win and allow our future generations have a free world. The Islamo-Facisits will win if we let them. Victory is the only way we can win. They will kill us if we don't kill them first.

I'm sad that John Bolton has resigned from UN ambassador. I hope Bush gets a spine and recess appoints another with the same foresight: fight the war, support Israel, no nukes in Iran, no negotiations with Terrorist nations and the Axis of Evil. We need this more than ever.

The USS Intrepid is going in for a two year overhaul.

A month after a failed attempt to move the USS Intrepid, the historic aircraft carrier was freed Tuesday from the Hudson River anchorage where it had sat for nearly a quarter of a century.

"This old baby is moving," a joyous Intrepid Foundation President Bill White said aboard the vessel.

Some crew members cried and gave each other high-fives and hugs. Onlookers ashore cheered.

Decommissioned in the late 1970s, it was destined for the salvage yard when rescued by New York developer Zachary Fisher and transformed into a floating military and space museum that opened in 1982, recently drawing upward of 700,000 visitors a year.

Intrepid officials said the $60 million overhaul, lasting up to two years, would include stem-to-stern "refurbishment and renovation" to repair deterioration and open up long-closed areas to the public.

The ship's exhibits were put in storage and most of its 20-plus vintage warplanes were shrink-wrapped for protection during the hiatus.

Iraq is our "Dunkirk."

From Micheal Barone's townhall article talks about how Churchill's Dunkrik is like Bush's Iraq.

While George W. Bush's many critics and detractors portray him as facing the same dilemma as Lyndon Johnson in Vietnam, Bush himself seems determined to proceed the way Harry Truman did in Korea -- or, as some might put it, as Winston Churchill did after Dunkirk.

But Bush seems unpersuaded. "There's one thing I'm not going to do," he said at last week's NATO summit in Riga, Latvia. "I'm not going to pull our troops off the battlefield before the mission is complete."

In this, Bush has the support of others. Defense Secretary-designate Robert Gates opposes a quick pullout. So does the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Central Command's Gen. John Abizaid.

Bush is sticking to his principles and will stay to fight for victory in Iraq. Good for him. He is leading us to fight the fight. I always said it was like "Churchill's Dunkirk," when the allies retreated from France when it became invaded by the Germans.

Dunkirk, and the evacuation associated with the troops trapped on Dunkirk, was called a "miracle" by Winston Churchill. As the Wehrmacht swept through western Europe in the spring of 1940, using Blitzkrieg, both the French and British armies could not stop the onslaught. For the people in western Europe, World War Two was about to start for real. The "Phoney War" was now over.

The advancing German Army trapped the British and French armies on the beaches around Dunkirk. 330,000 men were trapped here and they were a sitting target for the Germans. Admiral Ramsey, based in Dover, formulated Operation Dynamo to get off of the beaches as many men as was possible. The British troops, led by Lord John Gort, were professional soldiers from the British Expeditionary Force; trained men that we could not afford to lose. From May 26th 1940, small ships transferred soldiers to larger ones which then brought them back to a port in southern Britain.

The beach at Dunkirk was on a shallow slope so no large boat could get near to the actual beaches where the men were. Therefore, smaller boats were needed to take on board men who would then be transferred to a larger boat based further off shore. 800 of these legendary "little ships" were used. It is thought that the smallest boat to make the journey across the Channel was the Tamzine - an 18 feet open topped fishing boat now on display at the Imperial War Museum, London.

Churchill never gave up. Either will Bush. WE will fight the fight and win. That I am sure of. (No matter what the MSM or Dems say!)
